The region for the article selection for this assignment is South or Central America.  Not refugees to the U.S.

This assignment is not required, but is offered for those who wish to add to their point totals.
For Assignment 1 the newspaper article you choose must have been published between January 7, 2019 and January 25, 2019.
Newspaper articles and commentaries are often used by historians as primary sources–as evidence for a topic they are writing about.  So our newspapers of today will become primary sources for historians in the future.  See page 5 of your syllabus for instructions on what is required in these assignments.  You are not guaranteed these points if you don’t follow the directions there.  See pages 5-6 in your syllabus for directions on how to write these papers and receive all 25 extra credit points.
Be sure to submit your file to BOTH Blackboard and Turnitin in order to get these points.
The region for the article selection for this assignment is South or Central America.  Not refugees to the U.S. from there; not U.S. policy toward that region.

Guidelines and Question for 500 word paper

The assignments consist of finding a newspaper article that appears during the time period of the course listed in the assignment, either in a local paper or in an on-line newspaper such as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Sun Times, Washington Post, Greenwood Commonwealth or any other United States or English language newspaper. This means CNN, yahoo, Fox News, MSNBC, Huffington Post, etc. are not eligible for these assignments. ONLY NEWSPAPERS/NEWSPAPER websites. Each article must have some discussion of, or allusion to, a region of the world designated for that particular assignment—See Assignments Tab as the regions change for each assignment. These are not articles on the U.S., U.S. policy in that region or immigrants from that region to the U.S.

1. These articles must come from newspapers, not websites unconnected to a print paper.

2. Cite the article [Title of the article, author [if given], name of the newspaper, date of publication] AT THE TOP OF YOUR PAPER. Put your name at the top of the paper, as well. No repeat headers allowed in your papers.

3. You are to summarize the article and the point of view of the author.

5. Then indicate whether you agree or disagree with what is presented and whether your textbook sheds any light on the subject—use the index and cite the textbook pages.

6. Comment on how history is “used” by contemporary authors to support their points of view or illustrate subject matters they deal with.

7. Have you learned anything from the article?

8. Finally, and most importantly, what are the specific sources the author(s) cite(s)/uses to support the article?

Each assignment must be turned in to BOTH the assignment board in Blackboard and to Turnitin. No extra credit assignment will be counted if you don’t turn the paper in to BOTH these websites. They must be at least 500 words in length, must address the eight numbered issues above, and must be dated in the designated dating range for the assignment in which you are turning in the paper. The subject matter of the articles should be about the region designated for the assignment. Another object of the assignment, as with other assignments in the course, is to follow specific directions, as you would be asked to do in any job situation.

The point of these assignments is for you to think about how history relates to what is happening now, so think about this issue as you write your essay.

In order to get these points your paper must be at least 500 words, must cover the topics/questions listed above and must have the complete citation of the article at the top of your paper [See no. 2 above] with your name above the citation.

4. Reading selection of Olympe de Gouges’ Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female citizen (written in 1791). The selection should be read in full at http://chnm.gmu.edu/revolution/d/293/ with background provided on p. 874 of our class text. You should also look at the revolutionary document of 1789 that she is “correcting,” called Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen (http://avalon.law.yale.edu/18th_century/rightsof.asp ). Olympe de Gouge has the status of women as her main concern. The general context is the French Revolution and the attempts to redefine rights and status once one replaces monarchy.

For the reading selection and topic you choose, your paper should answer the following four questions in detail (use four section headings):

1. Briefly introduce the writer and the situation that this reading is about. Identify the genre or nature of the reading. (Who is the author? Why did he or she write this piece?)

2. Using specific examples or lines within the reading, suggest the author’s key views and key aims for the reading audience. (Give a 1-2 paragraph summary of ideas.)

3. Evaluate the author’s strategy and what you see as the work’s likely effectiveness (or lack of effectiveness) for the target audience. If there is any known historical result, discuss that. (Look at the writing style and discuss who would read this.)

4. Evaluate how the reading impacted you. Identify any analogous situations today, and also key lessons you get from the reading that could be relevant to one’s professional and personal life. (How did you like this? How do the ideas relate to situations today?)

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • This course requires the use of Strayer Writing Standards (SWS). The format is different than others Strayer University courses. Please take a moment to review the SWS documentation for details.
  • Include a title page containing the title of the assignment, your name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date of submission. The cover page and the source list are not included in the required assignment length (350 words minimum).

  • You must use the class text and also any source(s) identified (with links) above for the topic you choose, focusing on the main primary source of that author. If you use any additional source (optional), it must be from the university’s online library and of good academic quality for college work.

Schools always seem to be at the short end of the political stick when it comes to funding. State tax dollars are the principal means of funding schools, yet it would be very unpopular for politicians to suggest raising taxes even if schools are underfunded.

Some suggest that it would be better to fund schools locally through local taxes. Others say it would be more efficient if we privatized schools as the charter school movement suggests. Still, others suggest that if we offer extra dollars to schools that perform well on the FCAT then that will get everyone to be more successful with the funds they have and to compete for additional merit funds.

What do you think is the best remedy for the difficult question of how best to provide schools with sufficient funds to do a good job?

Please limit your responses to two paragraphs. Quality (not quantity) is the key!

Cultural Immersion Project Part 1

For this assignment I have chosen black culture. I am a recent white transplant from Central Oregon to Southeast Texas. A  97% dominant white culture to a multicultural region with a nearly 50% black population. This is a brand-new experience for me and my family and the culture at large is very different than what we are accustomed to. From language dialect, food, customs, health, government, city structure, parks, recycling, and most shocking, is the weather! Central Oregon is known as the “high-desert” and is very dry with long winters. We moved here last July in the middle of summer! Keep in mind I am very active and an avid runner.  However, just from moving my belongings from the truck to the house, I never perspired so much in my entire life! My clothes were soaked like I had just jumped into a pool. The bill of my hat was dripping with sweat! A reprieve is the fact that although it is the middle of winter where we live now, it was 70 degrees on Monday! Aside from the major weather difference, the culture has had both positive and negative impressions. Since we are near Louisiana, we have been introduced to great cultural foods like “Gumbo”. There is also something say about “Southern Hospitality”. In general people have been very friendly and welcoming. One difficult adjustment has been the lack of environmentally friendly recycling. In Central Oregon we had a recycling garbage can for plastics and paper, a yard debris can, and a glass recycling container. Here there is no household recycling effort at all. Another notable uneasiness we have experienced, is the undertones of racism coming from both blacks and whites.  “in analyzing racial discrimination, has argued we ‘must not look for the gross and obvious. The subtle, cumulative mini-assault is the substance of today’s racism” (Smith, et.al., 2016, p.1192).

Regarding my specific cultural immersion and the challenges that I will face, I am really looking forward to learning more about the black culture, specifically in this geographical area. I intend on practicing here, so all the insight and knowledge gained is going be beneficial now and for the future. There is a rich Christian heritage in this region and there are more churches than I can count. However, while integration is noted in most all business and public settings, from what I have observed and have been told, churches are nearly 100% segregated. It is mystifying to me how “like minded” people can be so distant from one another; regardless of skin color. “I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment” I Corinthians 1:10 (NIV).  I am eager to visit an all-black church, to mingle, interview, and gain insight about their culture and perspectives. One reason for church segregation that I have gleaned at least from a white person’s viewpoint, is differences in music preference. “The African American music tradition stretches back to songs and laments brought back from the Middle Passage. Work Songs shouts and spirituals were always a part of the African American’s lives” (Black History in America, n.d.).

Understanding Global Health

Drawing on both of this week’s readings, explain in what way the cases of Yolande and her immigration to the US via Guantanamo and the case of Jesus, who went from Cuba to Congo and back to Cuba, talk about structural violence. Although both tested HIV positive, they had access to different resources, political and health systems. In order to fully answer the question for this essay, you will need to provide an analysis of the different health systems and rationales (i.e. cost-effectiveness of treatments; health outcomes, etc.), used in the Haitian, US and Cuban contexts. From Farmer you can draw on specific context details. From Crisp, you can make use of the many examples he presents and analysis of different approaches. Aim for a comparison and contrast of at least two similarities and two differences between the systems to build your paper (and argument).

Note: This is how should you format your paper:

  1. Give a title to your paper (i.e. “Week One Paper”; “Understanding Global Health…”; ext.)
  2. Length: 2-page long, not including List of References, which you need to add at the end (see syllabus for more details).
  3. Double-space text with Times New Roman font size 12.
  4. Personal Details: ALWAYS include your full name and student number in your weekly papers.
  5. Remember to demonstrate that you have carefully and thoroughly done the required readings. ALWAYS acknowledge your sources in-text AND in the List of References at the end (see syllabus for more detail).

This assignment is for a counseling course

Distant Encounter

This part involves scholarly resources and Internet/media resources related to the cultural group you will be exploring. This group may be a different ethnicity, religion, and/or culture or have other significantly different cultural features (e.g., the elderly in nursing homes, disabled children, disabled adults, the homeless, prisoners, etc.). You must select a group with whom you have little or no prior experience. For example, if you have interacted with many Cubans previously, you cannot base the project on the Cuban culture. This also applies to your own cultural background. For example, if you are a white student from an Irish background, you cannot base the project on the Irish culture. No reusing past experiences. The cultural group you select must be new for you. For the Cultural Immersion Project – Parts 2 and 3, be aware that you must both participate in cultural group activities as well as interview an individual or married couple from your selected cultural group (see the instructions documents for Parts 2 and 3 for information on those later assignments); therefore, choose a culture group with whom you will be able to interact.

You will read at least 3 scholarly sources on your cultural group of interest (the resources must published by 2005 or later). A pertinent, unassigned chapter from the McGoldrick et al. text may count as 1 of these resources; however, the Hays & Erford text chapters may not count as a source. You must also use the Internet or media to examine at least 3 significant media sources related to the culture. For example, on the Internet, you may find the following types of resources that are both culturally useful and prominent:

· Online newspapers from the selected country,

· Internet radio broadcasts,

· Music from the country/group,

· Movies or videos,

· Culture-specific online magazines or websites, and/or

· Organizations.

You will answer the questions listed below. First person may be used in your answers. This assignment may also be in outline form instead of formatted as a traditional paper; however, you must observe correct and current APA style. The paper must have a correct title page, and you must use a reference page if you cite resources (no abstract is needed). A word estimate is beside each question; however, the quality of your answer is more important than the word count. You may expand further, but you do not have to do so.

1. What are some key things you have learned about this culture through reading the scholarly sources? (approximately 300 words)

2. What are some key things you have learned about this culture through interacting with Internet/media resources related to this culture? (approximately 300 words)

3. Are there any current surprises regarding what you are finding out about this culture? (approximately 100 words)

4. How does your search through the literature and Internet/media impact your expectations as you plan your immersion activities? (approximately 200 words)

On the reference page, list the scholarly resources and Internet/media resources that you used for this part of the immersion project in current APA format.

Also include a bible script that states understanding different cultures
