“How does social class correlate with health outcomes? In other words, explain how access to healthcare, free time to engage in exercise, and exposure to chronic stressors (in addition to the time and resources available to manage them), vary by social class— and in turn, how that impacts one’s health.

Health and inequality can cross all sorts of barriers; however, in most cases, social-economically, it can have adverse effects on minorities. In most cases, health is an issue with all people, overeating to not eating enough. But several stressors can affect people in many ways. For example, when my husband died, unknowingly, my stress level elevated so high that I became an angry, upset person at the drop of a hat. In my eyes, I was alright, but it took a therapist to help me realize that I was not.

The results was the fact that I was trying to stay vital for everyone else, that I fail to grieve, and that grief came out in various ways in which, at first, I was not aware. For the most part, it did not affect my physical health, but it did affect my mental health. After implementing grief counselling, it seems to subside. But that is not always the case. Some may experience fatigue, loss or gaining weight, pain, hair falling out or greying before time, teeth falling out, drug abuse, including prescription drugs.

I am grateful that I have a job that offers free counselling, and the other therapist, my church, paid the bill. After counselling for many months, I began to see the light by grieving when my heart was heavy and happy when my heart was merry—not pretend that it did not hurt but adjust when needed. Again, I can say that I am fortunate enough to have these resources, but it may be even harder to change for those who do not. You can say that our health system does not always cover needed medical care, but it is far better than in other countries. At least, I hope so.

What is a food desert? Why does it occur? How does the phenomenon of food deserts negatively impact the health of certain groups of people?

I must admit that I am 56 years old and very healthy, but when depression hits me, it is like one of those old sitcoms where the woman sits down on the couch crying and eating ice cream. I have done that, but it was not just ice cream, but chocolate cake. But it is not healthy food and can, in the long run, cause health problems, such as obesity. I think one reason for eating food deserts, and it seems to calm you down. Although I do not believe there is any medical proof of that, I think that it works. But what a person must do, to use moderation, if all possible. One of my co-workers was on this eat healthy kick. And she said that it is easy to eat unhealthily than it is to eat healthily” I thought about what she said and concluded that she was right. It is easy to buy and dollar hamburger at a fast-food place than to go home and spend endless hours slaying over a hot stove. However, that may be time-consuming, but it is proven to be healthier, so which road do we choose.

Now, does this eat unhealthy centers around certain ethnic groups. I understand by watching the videos and knowing people that some diseases are prevalent in certain nationalities. I guess it has a lot to do with our culture, accessibility, money, time, genes, and more. But whatever choices we make can affect any people down the road. I know that they mention high-blood pressure for African Americans and diabetes for Hispanic. That may be true to a certain degree, but I do not believe that just because you are of that nationality, you will be diseased by one of these issues.

Consider the social identities of race and sexuality. In each of those identities, there are certain groups that tend to experience discrimination and inequalities. Based on the resources you reviewed, explain how the actual experience of discrimination and inequality can negatively impact one is physical (not just emotional) health? In other words, what is the connection between the experience of inequality and discrimination and negative health outcomes?

I believe we focus on inequality and race that is woven into the fabric of our past and modern-day society. But as for the COVID-19 issues, it has crossed all inequality and race barriers. It does not discriminate. Whether you are e poor or rich, it can grip you with a powerful hold. But based on the material viewed, discrimination and inequality can harm your physical and mental health. Let us face it, a black man having the same qualifications and education as his white counterparts and then realizing that he may not get the position because of his race. That within itself brings a sort of dark cloud upon his self-esteem.

He might think, why did he go through all that trouble and cost to get a no before he walks through the door. That can cause a whole lot of stress, significantly if his family depends upon him to be the breadwinner. Like my husband, wrongly accused of a crime, finally got parole, and could not find work to help take care of his family. So, what he did was start his own mechanic business, which kept a roof over our heads, food, and clothing. Of course, I stood right by him, working to make his life better. He did become depressed, heart problems, high blood, stroke, and high blood pressure along the way. And on July 22, 2020, he died. Were the stressors of not being able to find a job the reason? Was his worry of going back and forward to court trying to prove his innocence? Was it his pride not being able to do what he desired for his family? Who knows? He is not here to tell the story, but I think it was all the above.  So yes, inequality can cause a once healthier person to experience unhealthy results if you allow it.”

In other words, explain how access to healthcare, free time to engage in exercise, and exposure to chronic stressors (in addition to the time and resources available to manage them), vary by social class— and in turn, how that impacts one’s health.

Social class is something that tends to be looked at within your whole life of growing. “Sometimes, these efforts take the form of euphemistic terms for members of particular ethnic, racial, religious, gender, sexual, and ability groups”. Newman, D. M. (2016).  Nonetheless, whether you were rich, middle class, or poor there are things that are expected the minute you are born into the world of different brackets. However, upper-class individuals will have better opportunities than lower-class individuals. Such as longer doctor time, to be able to ask more questions about their health and treatments if needed.  Also, affordable, and better medications, not generics brands to have a speedy recovery. Also, the upper class most likely gets the best professional care it is available due to their class of wealth. Whereas the lower-class will be serviced with minimal care so fast and sent on their merry way. Most likely not giving the opportunity to ask about any other concerns but what they say they were there for.

What is a food desert? Why does it occur? How does the phenomenon of food deserts negatively impact the health of certain groups of people?

To my understanding of researching food, deserts are defined as be part of the country’s emptiness where there is no access to healthy food options. Furthermore, food deserts seem to impact African Americans more in a negative way because they have no options to eat a healthy diet. On the other hand, when it comes to all the fresh fruit, vegetables, and other types of healthful whole foods to eat, which is usually not found in disadvantaged regions may occur problems. On the other hand, the food desert is known mainly for a lack of healthy food providers, grocery stores, farmers’ markets, across the world. However, it is expensive to eat healthy now of days.  Therefore, people such as the lower-class must settle with what is around them to survive. Therefore, the negative impact to lower class is high because according to authors Young & Wasser (2007), “Addressing minority health, there are three pressing issues however as mention by Dr. Terrence Fullum, Access to health care, obesity, youth violence.” (2007) Therefore, it leads the lower-class individuals to become more under the spotlight of being obese in the future that leads to unhealthy medical problems.

Unfortunately, minority populations that include Black, Hispanic and LGBTQ members are usually the affected individuals when it comes to these financial disparities for equal health. On the other hand, facing disturbing hardships when it comes to discrimination and inequality may have significant physical effects on a group of people placed in certain categories of life. However, in this case of ethnic minorities and those in the LGBTQ+ community tend to suffer the most. In other words, both groups tend to face a persistent history of discrimination which still faces brutality and racism today. As I mention, lingering stress from everyday obstacles can lead to serious health issues. However, to my understanding that is not all it can lead to when put in such a category of inequality. According to Chatel, A (2014) “LGBTQ+ children and teens living in homophobic environments are far more likely to attempt suicide, compared to those living in an accepting environment. (2014) Therefore, interest groups are restricted in their access to their community health programs. Nonetheless, they tend to live with the emotional instability of being looked at as an outcast to society when their physical health decreases as well.”
