Ethical Reasoning Paper
This final written assignment should be written in essay form with the following clearly labeled sections:
- Introduction (Your thesis-statement should be at the end of your introduction or at the beginning of your second section, and labeled as your “Thesis Statement”)
- Ethical Argument
- Explanation and Defense
- Objection and Response
- Conclusion
The paper should be between 1,300 and 1,500 words, utilize three scholarly resources, and include a title page and reference page.”
A failure to have 5 clearly labeled sections that correspond to the 5 sections above means that you have not meaningfully done the week 5 assignment.
Section 1, “Introduction”: By this time in our class, you should know what a good introduction looks like. My suggestion is that the final sentence of your introduction be your thesis-statement (and you should label it as your thesis-statement), and will serve as the conclusion to the argument you present in your second section.
Section 2, Argument: An ARGUMENT has a clear conclusion (position statement, thesis, etc.) toward which you are arguing (providing reasons, facts, etc. in order to “prove” the point). The conclusion of your ethical argument is the answer you are giving to the ethical question you are attempting to address. Thus, you are combining the elements of a thesis and supporting reasons from week one’s assignment, hopefully updated and improved.
Section 3, Explanation and Defense: Here you are providing the information about the ethical theory that you are using to arrive at the conclusion (thesis) of your position. In this section you combine the notions of theory explanation and theory application from previous assignments.
Section 4, Objection and Response: In this section you offer an opposing view to your own thesis That is, if you are arguing in favor of abortion rights as your primary thesis, in this section you will offer an objection to that position from the pro-life side. In other words, you take issue with something in your primary argument (OBJECTION), and then you show why this objection is wrong (RESPONSE).
Section 5, Conclusion: You should know what is expected here. If you have any doubts, read the assignment’s instructions.
Here are the points for which I will look in the order you should have them in your assignment.
