BMGT Case Study

Annie is considering amending her current organizational structure.  Using your reading  to support the reasoning, advise Annie on the organizational structure that might work well to help solve her project problem:

Project:  Annie Oakley wishes to develop the business to incorporate a new style of rifle that is computer generated, plastic, and collapsible.  The rifle also takes plastic bullets. This process must cost less than 1 million dollars and take less than 2 months to produce.  Annie has one large client who will pay 3 times her investment and is anxious to accept the project.  However, it will be a one of a kind project and Annie is not sure others will have a use for the gun in the future.

Annie currently has four leadership team members that each head up a division: rifle design, rifle manufacture, customer service, and sales. They each have final decision making authority within their departments.  Annie says that she is thinking of creating an additional link in the decision train for the new project with one department head that like the other division heads, reports to the leadership team.  Annie feel the need to disband the project after the client sale is complete.  Annie would like to know what would happen if the fifth link were self-contained.  Explain how you would allocate the resources of the company to make the new link in the decision train work on a daily basis?  Be creative yet practical thinking of the types of people you would need to accomplish the goal, financial resources, human capital, etc.  Be sure to consider the various other departments and how they would interface with the project team.  Alternatively, how would the link work if it were self- contained?

You have just been promoted to a mid-level manager at a Fortune 500 company. This promotion was a surprise, but your boss decided to leave the company and you were promoted to lead the most profitable division in the company.

This is your first week in this position, and you are taking part in a high-level meeting about the financial state of the company. Due to the poor state of the economy, which has caused sluggish sales, upper management has decided to downsize the entire company by dismissing 3% of employees in every division.

Write an appropriate memo to all of the team leaders in your division giving them the bad news.

  • All downsized employees will receive three months’ severance pay.
  • COBRA will be available, so health insurance can be continued for up to 1 year. It costs $740/month.
  • Employment counseling will be available, so employees can update their resume, get help searching for jobs, and get help finding retraining/college programs.

Defend your promotion in the memo since you used to be a team leader and know the question will be asked.

Guidelines for Submission: Memo assignments should use standard memo format: a heading segment, single-spacing, left-alignment of text without paragraph indentations, 12-point Times New Roman font and one-inch margins. Your short paper should not be more than one page in length.

Competency

Prepare and evaluate the use of media visuals to improve persuasive and marketing communication.

Instructions

You are a visual communication expert for a company that creates and maintains websites for large businesses and organizations. They called a meeting a few days ago to bring various departments together for a “think tank” session. The goal of this session was to update the images and visual elements on the website of your newest client: a large medical facility’s website. Currently, they are using the same website images across all websites in the following American locations: New York City, Miami, Phoenix, and Denver.

As the meeting progressed, several people posed several situational conversations. You took careful notes during the meeting, and as you review them at home, you decide to create a video to address all the issues discussed.

In less than seven minutes, your video will outline the importance of using cultural familiarity, perspective framing, and emotional appeal in order to visually persuade viewers in all of these different locations. For clarity, you decide to include specific visual images and examples that could replace current website images for each situation. During the video, you plan to include audio explanations to prove your points to the other “think tank” members. You will upload your video to YouTube and submit the link so all the members of the team can take the time to review the video before the next meeting.

You review the situational conversation notes:

  1. Carol asks: “Why can’t we just use the same images that are already being used for all the different locations? All the images of the medical staff look American enough.”
  2. Daniel states: “Let’s use images of families in all of the images that scroll through the main website page. That will catch everyone’s eye-everyone has a family somewhere.”
  3. Caleb questions: “The pictures we use should all be outdoors and of people having fun. Isn’t that what all patients want to see when they visit the medical facilities website?”
  4. Heather states: “Maybe we should think like the potential patients that might visit this website. What would those patients want to see regarding this facility?”
  5. Samuel asks: “How can we use images to get people to feel like they will get better, or experience a miracle, or receive better treatment here than at some other facility?”
