Genogram: Hernandez Family

Murray Bowen (as cited in Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016, p. 595) developed the genogram, a tool to help social workers and other practitioners create a record of family relationships. Once a social worker creates a genogram for a client, he or she may refer to it when analyzing the client’s situation.

To prepare for this Assignment, become familiar with how to create a genogram, which is presented in this week’s resources. Also, review this week’s media about Juan and Elena Hernandez’s visit with their social worker.

Psychosocial Theory and Role Theory

Social work takes a holistic view to social problems, arguing that they are complex and multilayered, often contributed to by a number of individual, psychological, and social processes. Consequently, psychosocial theory is a theoretical lens that has been employed in social work to apply to an array of problems and populations. It also emphasizes respecting diversity factors and the strengths that individuals, families, and communities bring to the change process.

When attempting to understand the presenting problems of individuals, families, and/or organizations, it is also important to take into account the social roles they take on. As the name implies, role theoryas a theoretical lens focuses on the roles assumed by individuals. The theory maintains that people’s behaviors are influenced by their role and the inherent expectations, norms, and power that underlie those social roles.

This week, you will put on two new theoretical lenses—psychosocial theory and role theory. You will examine how problems are conceptualized through the world of psychological and social processes as well as social roles.

Discussion: Psychosocial Theory and Diverse Groups

There will be times when a social worker is presented with a case where they are not familiar with the surrounding psychosocial issues. Because social workers are on a continual journey in learning, it is important to read pertinent literature. This Discussion provides an opportunity to visit Walden Library and strengthen your skills in identifying and locating an empirical research article.

To prepare:

  • Select one of these three groups: (1) an immigrant individual from a racial or ethnic minority group, (2) a gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) individual, OR (3) an individual who is physically disabled.

Assignment: Application of Role Theory to a Case Study

This week, you will use role theory to apply to your chosen case study. In other words, your theoretical orientation—or lens—is role theory as you analyze the case study.

Use the same case study that you chose in Week 2. (Remember, you will be using this same case study throughout the entire course). Use the “Dissecting a Theory and Its Application to a Case Study” worksheet to help you dissect the theory. You do not need to submit this handout. It is a tool for you to use to dissect the theory, and then you can employ the information in the table to complete your assignment.

To prepare:

  • Review and focus on the same case study that you used in Week 2.
  • Review the websites and guides for developing PowerPoint skills found in the Learning Resources.
  • Record presentation using PersonalSpace.
By Day 7

Submit a narrated PowerPoint presentation using Kaltura Media that includes 11 to 12 slides.

  • Each slide should be written using bullet points, meaning no long paragraphs of written text should be in the slides.
  • Include a brief narration of less than 30 seconds for each slide (i.e., the narration takes the place of any written paragraphs, while the bullet points provide context and cues for the audience to follow along).

Your presentation should address the following:

  • Identify the presenting problem for the case study you selected. (Remember the presenting problem has to be framed from the perspective of role theory. For example, the presenting problem can be framed within the context of role functioning).
  • Identify all the relevant roles assumed by the client.
  • Analyze the social expectations and social and cultural norms revolving around the role, social position, and role scripts of one of the roles assumed by the client.
  • Explain the role and social position of the social worker in working with the client in the case study.
  • Describe how the role(s) and social position(s) assumed by the social worker will influence the relationship between the social worker and the client.
  • Identify three assessment questions that are guided by role theory that you will ask the client to better understand the problem.
  • Identify and describe two interventions that are aligned with the presenting problem and role theory.
  • Identify one outcome that you would measure if you were to evaluate one of the interventions you would implement to determine if the intervention is effective.

Hello Class,

I selected Latino immigrant children to conduct a library search for an empirical study focused on the unique psychosocial factors or issues a social worker should be aware of when working with that group.

Four specific psychosocial factors that should be taken into account in order to understand the psychosocial context when working with Latino children are:  Psychologically related—1. “Large numbers of refugee children arriving in high-income countries[, i.e., the United States,]…have mental health needs [such as PTSD] that are higher than for the general population and that these are exacerbated by the numbers of traumatic events they have experienced and the post-migration stressors they continue to be exposed to” (Fazel, 2018); 2. Adapting to a new culture is an issue because “[children] struggle with finding their place as they bridge the gap between values and traditions of their home country and those of their new country, the United States; Socially related—3. Residence instability is problematic, particularly for the undocumented seeking asylum, as “[c]urrent political and economic instability in Latin America has led to a significant displacement of citizens (approximately 5 million, according to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre), both within and outside of their countries of origin”; and, 4. Family stressors such as discrimination and illness, etc. (Aparicio, Pecukonis, & Zhou, 2014).

A psychosocial intervention that addresses one of the four specific psychosocial factors described above is the trauma systems therapy approach.  “The trauma systems therapy approach developed by Saxe, Ellis and Kaplow (2007) is a collaborative, multisystem approach to treat traumatized children within their communities” (Robinson & Kaplan, 2011).Hello Class,

Outcomes I might measure if I were to evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions are Latino immigrant children stable with permanent shelter, enrolled and receiving services in school, e.g., ESL, individual/group/family counseling, free breakfast and lunch, etc., health evaluations and treatments by local clinicians, clothes and household supplies from community organizations and churches, and government and privately-funded sources for food security.

One advantage of using a psychosocial framework in social work practice with Latino immigrant children are the ability “to intervene [on their behalf] within multiple social systems, using multiple modalities of treatment and a blend of treatment techniques” (Robinson & Kaplan, 2011).  According to Fazel (2018), refugee children have many needs to be addressed that might present within both their mental and physical health as well as their broader systems, be that in their family, school or the wider community.

One psychosocial behavior may be hostility in the gay and lesbian population.  One could see themselves in a role that they feel defines them, or that they must constantly define for others.  They could look inwardly for strength and outwardly give the impression that they are content with their life as they are treated.  Living with two daughters that identify as bisexual, we have been exposed to and have tried to help in the hostility they may feel mostly towards other girls that they have expressed interest in, and they find out that their parents are not accepting of their sexuality.  It saddens me, and I try to be there for both of them when they have questions, and hope they do not grow up with hostility.

Another is social conformity.  When I was a child, I knew I liked boys, but had never given a thought about same sex couples.  We went to Pride two weeks ago in Pittsburgh, and it was wonderful to feel the love and simple happiness of not being afraid to express one’s self (despite the church group that preached against homosexuality) but in my work in Atlanta, I met a wonderful woman who has a wife, and she sadly explained they lived in a small town.  She said she was afraid of holding hands in public with her partner.  I know that this is a very sensitive psychosocial topic that needs to be worked upon to achieve epiphany for some that are hesitant to accept their family or friends.

Yet another is a mental illness that they may have.  Certainly this must be looked at and tended to by a doctor, and with our piecemeal system of care, it could be difficult or even dangerous to find care in one’s city.  There could be fear of retribution from the doctor, even though they’ve taken an oath.

Finally pain can most definitely be another factor.  With the fear of pain diagnosis ripe on the minds of everyone for fear of addiction, many types of pain management might not be considered including medical marijuana and CBD oil can and should be explored.  Right now there is a fear of retribution that should be taken into consideration in order to treat the patient.

I think as simple as it sounds, talk therapy is a wonderful resource and should be used to it’s fullest.  There is something to be said for ‘verbally vomiting’ on someone else who is paid to listen.  It is easy, and can be measured by a scale (1-10) or a pre treatment questionnaire and post treatment questionnaire.

Feminist Theory and Empowerment Theory

Week 7: Feminist Theory and Empowerment Theory

Social workers often confront issues pertaining to marginalization, social inequality and inequities, disparities, discrimination, and deprivation of human rights with individuals, groups, and communities. Theories that directly address these issues include, but are not limited to, feminist theory and empowerment theory. The underlying values of these theories emphasize reducing the hierarchy or power differentials between groups (for example, between client and social worker or between residents and those who hold power in a community).

Oppression can occur within certain groups that have traditionally been marginalized. These groups might include women; racial minorities; those from low socioeconomic brackets; religious groups; and gay, lesbian, and transgender individuals. Feminist theory and empowerment theories outline principles, skills, behaviors, and interventions for social workers to engage social action that promotes empowerment, equality, and inclusion.

This week, you explore how feminist theory and empowerment theory are applicable in social work practice.

Discussion: Values Underlying Theory and the NASW Code of Ethics

Every profession has a code of ethics that guides professional behavior. In social work, the NASW Code of Ethics guides the behavior and decision-making practices of social workers. It is important that the theories social workers select in working with clients align, or are consistent, with the values and ethical principles identified in the NASW Code of Ethics.

Submit a Kaltura video of yourself discussing the client from the perspective of feminist theoryYour video should be no longer than 5 minutes.

  • Although this is a professional presentation, it is not a formal presentation as in a speech. Imagine that you are discussing your case with a group of peers in a meeting. To verbally present a case can be challenging—but it is also a skill for which practice can relieve anxiety and result in improvement. This will give you an opportunity to practice how to deliver material in a professional manner.
  • You can have notes in front of you to help you remember your points.
  • However, your video does need to be professional. In other words, dress professionally, maintain eye contact as if you were speaking in front of your colleagues, and finally be sure to record yourself in a room that is quiet and where no one interrupts you.

Your video presentation should include the following:

  • In 1 to 2 sentences, identify and describe the problem to be worked on in your chosen case study.
  • In 1 to 2 sentences, explain how feminist theory you are utilizing defines and explains the cause of the problem.
  • In 1 to 2 sentences, use feminist theory to describe the role of the social worker to facilitate change in the case study.
  • In the assessment phase, identify 2 assessment questions you will ask to explore what the client’s goals are and how they will get there.
    • Remember, feminist theory should be driving the assessment.
  • Describe two interventions to address the problem and explain how the clients will implement the interventions.

Empowerment  Theory

Summary of Underlying Principles and Values

Most people as individuals usually know what their needs are better than anyone else. Although most people do not think about it, each one of us holds the power to act upon these needs but may not realize this during a crisis or in a difficult situation. The individual may need guidance from someone asking them the right questions that will help this realize and understand this fact. They need to understand that once they start acting on their needs and begin empowering themselves to improve their situations, this is not a short term process. As they continue through their life the empowering process should also be a part of their lives. It does not matter what background a person has, all of us have some knowledge and experience that can be used to empower ourselves to do better in difficult situations.

Consistency with the NASW Code of Ethics

As social workers using a theory such as the empowerment theory, we are helping the clients understand and address their problems therefore we are providing a service to these clients which is consistent with the NASW Code of Ethics. AS the clients progress during the use of the empowerment theory this in turn is helping them to overcome whatever social injustice they may have been facing which is also consistent with the NASW Code of Ethics. Some of these clients may not exactly feel worthy of treatment for whatever reasons but as social workers we are to treat them with dignity and as worthy people. As we do this hopefully the clients themselves with realize their worth as a person. This is also consistent with the NASW Code of Ethics.

He had lost his ability to work and had complications from hallucinations and some depression issues. All of this was compounded by the fact he had a history of refusing his medications on a regular basis. The ethical standard I would apply here is dignity and worth of a person. As time went by while dealing with this individual, he began to understand that his life was worth something even though he was having these issues. Eventually he began to take his medications until he was back on a regular schedule and in turn his whole situation began to improve. The frequency of the hallucinations decreased and his depression episodes were decreased.

The feminist theory states the different situations women encounter, and it advocates for women and equality in the following areas: their nationality, gender, race, and sexual orientation (Turner,2017). Among the values upheld by Feminist theory is social change, advocacy, equality, and accountability, gender equality, and remove all forms of oppression.

According to the NASW code of ethics 2019, it states that  Social workers should not practice, condone, facilitate, or collaborate with any form of discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, political belief, religion, immigration status, or mental or physical ability.

The client from my field experience is a 28years old African American her name is Lisa; she has a history of substance abuse and Self-harm and depression. She has two children, and she tried getting jobs in several places, but she said places she applied they don’t give the feminine gender jobs.

One ethical standard violated is gender discrimination; in her situation, she is marginalized when she wants to get a job.

Feminist theory encourages me to speak out for women that their voices are not being heard, advocating for the feminine gender removing every form of marginalization and bring a change to society.

Metaethics is the study of ethics. If one were to adopt an ethical theory would they derive their theory from ethic theories of the past? Inadvertently, the philosophical ethics which have been studied thus far are formed from short biblical extracts. Such as, Aristotle’s Golden Mean or living a virtuous life is biblical however, the Bible communicates no one is perfect. (Romans 3:23, KJV.) Duty Ethics which is similar to the Golden Rule. (Matt. 7:12, KJV.) The Divine Command Theory rationalizes following God’s commandments.  The reason philosopher’s have without intention formed principles which include biblical thought is humans are born with a moral compass, a standard for right and wrong, because they are made in God’s image. (Genesis 1:26-27, KJV.) Jones references, “the ultimate reality is God and His actions.” (2017, p. 104.) Human’s reality is living in God’s creation formed by His actions but gifted with the ability and responsibility of free choice. (Gen. 2:16-17, KJV.) The only way humans can be truly moral is by believing in the Lord (Gen. 15:6, KJV.) and asking through communication for wisdom. (James 1:5, KJV.)

The study of ethics must ask the question or moral argument, how can one know what makes an action moral or immoral? Jones answers this question with the statement, “…morality is the reflection of the holy nature of a transcendent God who himself can only be known through His self-revelation.” (2017, p.110.) Does God reveal himself?  It is found that God does reveal himself two different ways. God communicates His nature and personal qualities through creation. (Romans 1:20, KJV.)  General revelation, “the revelation of God to all people, at all times, and in all places that proves that God exists and that He is intelligent, powerful, and transcendent.” (Got Questions) God also reveals himself through miracles by communicating His, “… specific truths to specific people.” which is called special revelation.  (Jones, 2017, p. 126.) “Special revelation includes physical appearances of God, dreams, visions, the written Word of God, and most importantly—Jesus Christ.” (Got Questions) The unsurpassed form of communication on God’s part was revealing Jesus Christ.

“According to Jesus, the Old Testament was God’s specific revelation of Himself, and as such, it was only through the Old Testament that they could correctly perceive God, the world around them, and most importantly, Jesus Himself. The framework of the Old Testament was absolutely essential for understanding Jesus and His teachings. And, in turn, Jesus’ teachings, life, and death shed great light on the Old Testament.” (Powell, 2006. p. 73.)

Now that it has been proven that God does reveal himself is there another question? Science defines ethic as a set of moral principles. Does approaching ethics insist on a set of moral principles?  The Bible is not a list of rules or principles to follow hence the elimination of the Divine Command Theory. Divine Nature Theory argues that “God’s commands institutionalize and communicate the good that is part of the unchanging nature of God.” (Jones, 2017, p.104) When the Bible, Christians living word which is God breathed (II Timothy 3:16-17, KJV.) and a source of communication, does not give a specific instruction for a certain behavior or moral issue one uses the method of parallel reasoning. For instance, the Bible does not specifically reference drug abuse; however, one may be guided by the scripture of 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, KJV. The Bible shares a believer’s body is the temple, naos, inner dwelling, of the Holy Spirit and one should honor God with their body. This scripture allows one to reason that abusing one’s body is not honoring to God. One must utilize their intellect and responsibility of choice to interpret the scriptures properly.  By using fundamental truth from the Bible and God’s self- revelation one forms a system of belief or a chain of reasoning. Jones defines Revelational Christian Ethic as “the best route to a satisfactory ethical system is a reasoned, intelligent study of the Bible together with philosophical ethical theory in pursuit of the goal of becoming better Christians and better people.” (2017, p. 128.)

When specific principles or parallel reasoning is not revealed then one must utilize communication of prayer. One must through prayer and supplication request the Triune hear their calling and provide discernment or direction through the Holy Spirit. In ethical terms the Holy Spirit will guide and reveal the principles on which one must live in their journey of sanctification. Therefore, Revelational Christian Ethics is the best route in terms of ethical reasoning.

My faith and personal relationship with the Triune along with the scientific and historical accuracy of the Bible is the cognitive conclusion behind my ethics choice.

When developing and implementing a grant proposal, the grantee must consider the project structure and four models for proposal development. Understanding this framework helps to fine tune the proposal and ensure that consideration has been given to selecting the appropriate resources required to carry out the project.

There are four models that can be used for proposal development and implementation: individual, consultative, cooperative, and collaborative. Working as an individual may be sufficient for smaller projects or a pilot. However, the consultative, cooperative, and collaborative models may be required to carry out more complex work. Each of these models involve careful consideration of the required level of resources, collaboration, and partnerships.
