Discuss on Managerial Decision Making

Part I: Descriptive

Evaluate the decision making described in this case. Focus on the following four questions (but some sections will be longer than others).

  1. Analyze King’s customer experience using course concepts. What makes their free-to-play games so successful? NOTE: Talk about the psychology from the players’ perspective.
  2. Analyze the strengths in King’s decision making process, and what decision errors or biases these strengths reduced or eliminated. NOTE: Parts B & C are about organizational decisions, not about customer psychology.
  3. Analyze the weaknesses in King’s decision making process (errors, biases, etc.). Be specific about identifying the psychological drivers underlying these shortcomings.
  4. What are the psychological factors influencing Zacconi’s decision to accept Activision’s acquisition offer? NOTE: The actual decision is irrelevant. I’m only interested in what influenced his decision. (HINT: This is mostly found on p.1 & 9).

Part II: Prescriptive

Based on your Part I analyses, how can King Digital improve their decision making?

  1. Suggest one or two prescriptions that would help a company like King make better decisions in such situations (these should flow from Part I—this is not the place to introduce new weaknesses). Be as specific as possible about what you would do and what biases or errors you are trying to combat. Be concrete about how these prescription(s) would be implemented. Consider the costs (money, time, and psychological) associated with your suggested changes and be realistic. Please be creative here, but justify your prescriptions using concepts only from this class.
  2. Be aware that executives may not be particularly receptive to these prescriptions. What are the psychological sources of resistance? How might being acquired by Activision help overcome the resistance or make it worse?

Discuss the importance of Customer service

Respond to 2 peers. Include at least 2 outside sources in your postings for full credit.

Larry Fowler

 1.  Annika wants to implement a customer service test for her store. You compared two and found the following validity correlation coefficients: Test 1=.15, Test 2=.75. Annika prefers Test 1. Why do you recommend Test 2 over Test 1?

Test 2 has a different validity correlation coefficient than Test 1. However these tests have different factors and results based on these results going forward.  Test 2 also gives a different option than the option Test 1.  Test 1 has a different possible outcome based on these results.  Technology has also given rise to  more available data on individuals and new tools that enable organizations to mine these data for competitive advantage (Pulakos & Kantrowitz, 2016).

Customer service is important because companies look to retain customers and learn about their needs and exceed their needs.  Customer service reviews also factor into both Tests as this company looks to evaluate to where they can improve the customer service experience.

Zakkiyya Kelly

2. After implementing the customer service test, you found it results in disparate impact in gender. When would it be acceptable to use a measure that predicts job success, but that results in adverse impact?

Disparate impact in gender, or gender discrimination is not acceptable or condoned within the workplace and should never be acceptable. The only reason I could think of for when it would be, is to perhaps compare qualitative and quantitative statistics of job success between the company’s male and female employees, or to perhaps compare job retainability statistics between the two genders. It is against employment laws and EOC laws and policies to discriminate in employment. Gender discrimination may exist in various dimensions which include hiring discrimination, differences in salary and wages, discrimination/differences in promotion and inequity related to different goods and facilities provided to different gender (Abbas, 2011). Gender discrimination affect on employee productivity at a 95% confidence level which explained strong association between gender discrimination and employee productivity (Abbas, 2011).

For any business to predict the job success of an employee, this may present more difficult, as human behavior is something that may be observed, but predictions may be unforeseeable. Burnout, work stressors, work conflict, unhappiness in the job (over time), and work/home imbalances may affect an employee’s performance over time, or they could remain enthusiastic and productive during the remainder of their time on the job. The validity coefficient is a number between 0 and +1 that indicates the magnitude of the relationship between a predictor (such as test scores) and the criterion (such as a measure of actual job success) (Phillips, 2020, p.319). The validity coefficient is the absolute value of the correlation between the predictor and the criterion (Phillips, 2020, p.319). Because jobs and people are complex, a single measure can never fully predict what a person’s job performance will be because success on the job depends on so many factors. Therefore, validity coefficients rarely exceed .40 in staffing contexts (Phillips, 2020, p.319).  Several factors which could affect job success may include: Following the rules; Being courteous; Being a team player; Finding a mentor; Fitting in the with organization’s culture; Conquering negativity; and Finding a work-life balance (Goodwill Community Foundation, Inc., 2021).

Additional Requirements

Explain how critical thinking for decision making is applicable to the scenario.

Overview

Business leaders are often faced with situations that require swift but responsible decisions. You’ve learned how critical thinking is more than simply evaluating the pros and cons of a situation. It is a method that engages broad thinking abilities that include brainstorming, data analysis, creativity, collaboration, and reflection. The ability to adapt to ever-changing conditions through critical thinking and decision making is key to capitalizing on market upturns and staying afloat during economic declines.

As part of this course, you will complete a series of assignments.

Prompt

For this assignment, analyze the diversification strategy of either Disney or Kimberly-Clark using the documents linked within your Soomo webtext. Explain how critical thinking applies to decision making based on your review of a real-world scenario. Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:

  • Application: Explain how critical thinking for decision making is applicable to the scenario. Use evidence to support your explanations.
    • What makes critical thinking crucial for decision making?
  • Analysis: Explain how information (such as facts, opinions, and published reports) is used to determine or establish the context. Use evidence to support your explanations.
    • Why do you think the company reached the decision to diversify?
    • What steps do you believe were taken? Explain your response using sources found during the research of your selected company.
  • Conclusion and related outcomes: Describe the role of logic, evidence, and arguments in the company’s decision-making process.
    • Was the decision to expand products, services, or value chain successful? Why or why not?

To begin, choose one of the following to focus on for this assignment and review the corresponding document provided in the Soomo webtext.

  • Kimberly-Clark
  • Disney

Guidelines for Submission

Complete the Critical Thinking for Business Decisions worksheet in your Soomo webtext, download your completed work, and submit it in Brightspace for instructor feedback. You should write using a professional voice, and any sources should be cited according to APA style. Your assignment must be between 400 and 800 words in length.

Leading and Managing the HR Project

Continuing from the previous assignment, it is now important to consider your approach to leading and managing your HR project. Tightly structured projects tend to restrict cross-organizational communication. As such, objectives originate at the top of the project and are subdivided as they are passed down, resulting in little opportunity for creative contributions. Effective leadership and managing of the project can greatly improve communication and team contributions.

Instructions

Write a 5–6 page paper in which you:

  1. Select two types of project management power that would be relevant to your current project, and explain your rationale.
    • Be specific.
  2. Identify and briefly discuss a minimum of four outcomes (possible issues) resulting from managing projects, and address how you might resolve the issues. Be clear with your rationale.
  3. Discuss two increased challenges a project manager may face when leading virtual or global project teams.
  4. Recommend three strategies to deal with the challenges.
  5. Identify and explain your overall plan for communication management during the project. The plan must be comprehensive and at a minimum address structure, purpose, method, and timing.
  6. Use three sources to support your writing. Choose sources that are credible, relevant, and appropriate. Cite each source listed on your source page at least one time within your assignment. For help with research, writing, and citation, access the library or review library guides.

Why are many countries adopting “western” governance systems similar to those found in the United States and the United Kingdom that are more shareholder friendly?

Governance in Japan, Germany, and China has been changing as “western” governance systems have increasingly been adopted. Traditionally, boards of directors in these nations have largely been composed of insider manager directors. In 2015, Japan adopted a new governance code that strongly emphasized the importance of firms to elect many more independent outside directors. Activist shareholders and a strong market for corporate control have traditionally been absent in Japan. More recently, shareholders have been more active and the most successful ones have been labelled “engagement” funds. The change is signaled, for example, by the Japanese Government Pension Investment Fund choosing an activist investor, the Taiyo Pacific Partners LP—a U.S. based engagement fund —to manage some of its $1 trillion in assets. Furthermore, the Japanese Financial Services Agency has introduced a “stewardship code” that calls on investors to “press for greater returns.” As such, the Japanese environment is becoming more oriented toward “shareholder rights,” although the approach comparatively is not as “activist” as found elsewhere in the world. Besides a new brand of activism in Japan, activism is spreading around the globe including Germany. Again, a revised governance code pushed for more shareholder-friendly governance arrangements, including an emphasis on outside directors and stronger emphasis on executive long-term incentive compensation. With stronger emphasis on shareholders’ rights, activist funds pursued more activity. Cevian Capital, an activist fund, is involved in ownership with ThyssenKrupp and Bilfinger. Likewise, Elliott Management, another activist fund, is involved with Celesio and Kabel Deutschland. Although management teams are quite suspicious of activists in Germany and other continental European countries, “Germany is an area where activists may look because of its protections for minority investors in takeover deals.” However, research shows that activist investors have less influence on top management teams because of restrictive governance regulation. For example, one study found that activist investors’ involvement did not lead to increased CEO turnover. Although some activism has taken place in mainland China, firms in Hong Kong have been targeted more by activist funds. Hong Kong-listed companies have been loosening rules for foreign ownership and, therefore, companies have been paying more attention to what investors think in regard to governance and transparency. In mainland China, however, often shares are mostly owned by parent business group firms as well as the government or, because they are often younger, they are still owned by the firm’s founders. As such, there is less potential influence for foreign investors on company decisions. However, the Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect program has accelerated opportunities for activists on the mainland. Through the Connect program, foreign financial institutions can have direct access to mainland China’s capital markets. This means that foreign ownership will have more activist influence because of shareholder voting rights in local mainland China-listed firms. Also, many home-grown Chinese activist funds thrived due to their recent investments in the technology sector with the success of Alibaba, Tencent, and many other high technology firms. But how do owners from emerging market countries and countries with significant government ownership influence the firms they invest in overseas? Interestingly, sovereign wealth funds, many from emerging economies, are playing a dominant role by investing in developed economies as well as other emerging economies. In their own way, they are playing an activist role. For example, since the global financial crisis, many German firms have sought investment from sovereign wealth firms from Gulf States in the Mideast. In particular, many German major automobile firms have recruited Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) sovereign wealth fund investments during the stresses of financial restructuring spurred by the financial crisis. These sovereign wealth funds are long-term investors and reduce the possibility of a hostile takeover, which has become a more prominent feature in the German corporate governance landscape. Sovereign wealth funds are also taking active roles in climate change. For instance, the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund is divesting its assets in coal and other fossil fuels. Its strategy is to focus its wealth to have an influence on salient sustainability issues, such as climate change. Another example is the acquisition activity of Brazilian multinationals, which have been supported by its sovereign wealth fund, the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES). BNDES has been “involved in several large-scale operations and helped orchestrate mergers and acquisitions to build large ‘national champions’ in several industries.” For example, “BNDES helped rescue Brazilian meatpacker JBS-Friboi, which aggressively expanded internationally by acquiring large U.S. producers Swift and Pilgrim’s Pride, among others. In summary, western governance devices and shareholder activism have been spreading globally, and owners in emerging economies are participating in the market for corporate control and in restructuring investments, especially sovereign wealth funds that also exercise influence in developed as well as developing countries. These funds often focus to support government strategies, such as in China’s energy sector, where the Chinese government is seeking to acquire more energy assets and natural resources to support its economy. Sometimes these sovereign funds also support government positions, such as Norway, which is using assets to emphasize sustainability, an important social and political movement. Sources: M.
