Use this discussion sample as a guide when completing your own analysis.

Governments’ influence over trade and economies should not be underestimated. You may see some connections between culture and political ideologies, which can have positive and negative effects. Let’s dive into the political and legal environment for your project country. In this discussion, you will work on the following critical elements: Government and Ideologies, and Corruption.

Using The World Factbook and current news reports, identify the following elements of government:

  • Government type
  • Political leader(s)
  • Political pressure (or opposition) groups
  • Recent changes in governing rule

Other risks include corrupt practices, which are also heavily influenced by culture. Use Transparency International to identify three measures of corruption. Consider a review of the following:

  • Corruption Perceptions Index
  • Global Corruption Barometer
  • Global Corruption Report

Discuss what these political risks mean for businesses. What challenges or opportunities might an organization recognize with regard to the government and corrupt practices in the region? How can an organization protect against these risks and prepare management for issues they might face?

Respond to two of your classmates and share your observations regarding the government and corruption in the country. Ask questions to encourage further considerations.

Roger is a director of a major car manufacturer. This is one of the few remaining car companies yet to introduce a sport utility vehicle. Roger convinces the board to investigate forming a new division to design, build, and market a sport utility vehicle. Roger also convinces the board that the first sport utility vehicle that the division introduces should be the largest yet sold to the general public.The board set up a committee to do some research, and this committee hired a marketing consulting firm. The committee and the consulting firm both had a few reservations about such a large vehicle, but the data showed that the market could most likely support it. After much discussion, the board of directors voted in favor of creating the new division and the huge sport utility vehicle as its first product. The vote was 9 to 6 in favor of the plan.Shortly before this vehicle was introduced, there was a major oil supply disruption that caused the price of crude oil to nearly triple. Few purchasers were found for the huge new sport utility vehicle and the company lost considerable money. A shareholder files suit against Roger claiming he violated his duty to the corporation by convincing the board to build and market the large SUV.

After Michael Porter’s Five Forces Model one page assignment then go to the end of Chapter 4 and do Exercise 4C “Perform a Financial Ratio Analysis for Hershey Company” Step 1.  After conducting the Five Forces analysis on Hershey, and after completing the financial ratio analysis (one page or 300 words minimum). As a class, refine the Five Forces analysis and the financial ratio analysis so that they are acceptable for Hershey.
