Your paper should be written using the “conflict” and “symbolic interactionism” perspective. 1) What was the premise of the video? 2) Give two examples of how the children understood the situation they are in. 3) Why or why not do you see hope for the children. 4) How did the video make you feel?

Conflict Resolution Scenario

Conflict Resolution Scenario

In Week 2 you proposed how you would build your own team. Now, your newly formed team is starting to work on its first real project that needs to have strong collaboration and a quick turnaround. However, your team has encountered the following challenges:

One team member doesn’t agree with the goal and keeps questioning the processes.

Two team members are having a personal conflict, and this is preventing them from collaborating on the project.

One team member is not engaged.

Create a 6- to 8-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation, reflecting on your experience completing the Conflict Resolution Scenario. Remember to add speaker notes to support your main points. Speaker notes should be a minimum of 50 to 150 words per slide.

Answer the following questions in your presentation:

What were your choices for managing the conflict on your team?

What strategies did you employ to encourage collaboration and build consensus within a team? Are these strategies that you typically employ when confronted with a conflict? Why or why not?

How can you keep all employees on your team engaged? Provide examples.

What strategies from the multimedia piece best suit your current skill set? Why?

conflict management

After focusing on what teams are and how they form in the first two weeks of the course, this week’s focus is team dynamics. Team cohesion is an important part of an effective team, and this week we will discuss ways to develop shared knowledge, values, effective communication, and consensus. We will also examine conflict management and learn some ways to navigate through the inevitability of team conflict.

For this week’s discussion, consider the learning activities you’ve completed and your own experience within a team.

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

Share a time that you experienced conflict within a team.

What strategies did you and your team members use to manage and resolve the conflict? Were these strategies successful? Why or why not?

How could you apply the strategies presented this week to reach a more effective outcome?

Briefly describe the human or social services organization

Action research by its very nature is participatory and should allow all interested parties to participate in voicing their opinions, concerns, or ideas. Survey creation is often an attractive method by which to collect information from groups of people (though it is not the only method). Since action research is often less formalized than other types of research, survey creation can be more casual and conversational. The goal is for teams or groups to collect enough information from the surveys that they can then begin the next phases of action research: interpreting and implementing.

In this Assignment, you develop a survey that could be used in an action research project.

To Prepare

Imagine that you are implementing a well-being program for the staff at the human or social services organization at which you currently work or one at which you might work in the future. Consider how you might use an open-ended survey to determine the needs for this program.

The Assignment (1–2 pages):

  • Briefly describe the human or social services organization (real or hypothetical) for which you are creating your survey.
  • Create a 10-item, open-ended question survey that you could use to determine the needs for a well-being program for the staff.
  • Briefly explain why you selected each question for the survey.
  • Finally, describe the medium you would use to deliver the survey.

Support your Application Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list for all resources, including those in the Learning Resources for this course.

Assignment: Schizophrenia Over Time: Experiences Living With the Illness

Experiences of schizophrenia are not homogeneous; there is wide variety in onset, course of illness, and combinations of symptoms. Social workers need to be able to understand the different manifestations and pathways of the illness to plan interventions. Social work services play a key role in stabilizing crises, supporting family coping, and influencing overall quality of life and outcomes of individuals with schizophrenia. In this Assignment, you practice applying this necessary individualization.

To prepare: In the Learning Resources, focus on the associated features, development, and course of the illnesses in the schizophrenia spectrum. Also focus on descriptions of the disorder and the way it develops for different individuals.

Choose two articles from the list in the Learning Resources that apply to treatment support and interventions for the schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders chapter in the DSM 5. Choose either Saks or McGough to focus on for this assignment.

By Day 7

Submit a 3- to 4-page paper, supported by at least 4 scholarly resources (not including DSM-5), in which you address the following:

  • Describe Saks’s or McGough’s experiences with schizophrenia. Identify onset, associated features (specifically referencing the positive and negative symptoms), development, and course.
  • Explain how you would use the Clinician Rated Dimensions of Psychosis Symptom Severity measure and the WHODAS to help confirm your diagnosis.
  • Explain how you would plan treatment and individualize it for Saks or McGough. Support your response with references to scholarly resources. In your explanation, consider the following questions:
    • What are the long-term challenges for someone living with the illness?
    • What social, family, vocational, and medical supports are needed for long-term stabilization?
  • Briefly explain how race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religion, or other identity characteristics may influence an individual’s experience with schizophrenia.

Assignment: Characteristics of Psychopaths

In this week’s Discussion, you considered the complexity of psychopathy. Despite uncertainty about how to define and classify psychopathy, there are firm characteristics that are associated with psychopaths. In your resources this week, you are introduced to the work of Robert Hare, one of the foremost psychopathy experts. Among other things, Hare created a way to measure criminal psychopathy. His tool for measurement, the Psychopathy Checklist–Revised (PCL-R), is a list of characteristics consistently associated with psychopaths that may be useful in identifying and evaluating characteristics of psychopaths. Widely used to classify psychopaths in the criminal justice system, the PCL-R is not a perfect instrument and is not the only instrument of measure for psychopathy. It is, however, a means to discover patterns of features associated with psychopaths.

For this Assignment, review the psychopathic behaviors identified by Hare and Cleckley on page 174 of the course text, and consider the characteristics of psychopaths. Then, review the forensic report case study of D.V. in Chapter 5 of Forensic Mental Health Assessment: A Casebook, focusing on the criminal behavior and personality traits present in the case. Reflect on whether the personality traits indicate that the individual in the case study is a psychopath, as well as the degree to which psychopathy fully accounts for his behavior.

Assignment (1–2 pages):

  • Briefly describe the criminal behavior in the case study.
  • Explain whether or not the individual in the case study exhibits the characteristics of a psychopath, and why or why not.
  • Based on the information in the case study and this week’s other resources, explain at least oneconclusion you might draw about the nature of psychopathic behavior.

Support your Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list only for those resources not included in the resources for this course.

Disciplinary lines of research are used to study the connections between income inequality and other forms of social disparity? Disciplinary lines of research are used to study the connections between income inequality and other forms of social disparity?

For this discussion, you will share your analysis of research presented by Richard Wilkinson.  In this video, he discusses the impacts of economic disparity.  Watch the video carefully to define the problem that Wilkinson describes.  Then peel apart the research areas that are used to form Wilkinson’s study.

Try to build an appreciation for the diversity of different forms of knowledge.  You will also experiment with forming a critical question about research.

Watch this video:  https://www.ted.com/talks/richard_wilkinson#t-146833

Answer the following questions:

1.  Identify two or three different disciplinary lines of research that were used to study the connections between income inequality and other forms of social disparity?

2.  Are you critical of any of the data and its use in the comparisons that Wilkinson makes?  Explain how more explanation or deeper understanding of the research may lead to a different understanding of the correlations in Wilkinson’s presentation.

Example:  Wilkinson is primarily interested in economic inequality and its correlation with other social disparities.  Mental health  is probably most interesting to the field of psychiatry or psychology.  I am curious about the research on mental health, though.  I’m not sure that every society is measuring mental health the same.  If we had more information from Sociology, we might have a deeper understanding of societal and cultural attitudes toward mental illness and whether all societies report and treat mental health the same.  A simple search through Google Scholar turns up several articles about how mental health awareness is very low in Japan.  The stigma related to mental health can create barriers to seeking treatment.  Because of the stigma or access to treatment,  some countries may not have data on the incidences of mental health. So the data related to mental health in Wilkinson’s study may not be accurate, which could lead to an inappropriate assumption about the correlation and the comparisons that Wilkinson makes.  More information is needed.
