Explain how Senator Joseph McCarthy defined communist nations within the speech.

Instructions
Pick one (1) of the following topics. Then, address the corresponding questions/prompts for your selected topic. Use at least one (1) documented example of the corresponding primary source in your writing.

Option 1: McCarthyism and Anti-Communist Campaigns
The Cold War brought about an irrational fear of communism and communist activities in the United States. As we are learning this week, one of the most vocal instigators of this paranoia was Senator Joseph McCarthy. McCarthy delivered a speech about the imminent threat of communism on February 9, 1950. Perform a search on the internet and locate and read Joseph McCarthy’s speech given in Wheeling, West Virginia on February 9, 1950. Copy and paste the following keywords into your Google search bar: “Joseph McCarthy, Wheeling, West Virginia.” The speech is also referred to as “Enemies from Within.”

Construct the case study by responding to the following prompts:

  • Explain how Senator Joseph McCarthy defined communist nations within the speech. What specific threats did these nations pose?
  • Assess if Senator Joseph McCarthy charges were accurate.
  • Analyze anti-communist sentiments during the Cold War era, were these sentiments valid. If so, how? If not, why not?
  • Explain if there are other examples of events similar to the Red Scare that have occurred throughout history and modern day.
  • Examine what happened to people who invoked the Fifth Amendment, refused to appear or were found in violation of the law as defined by the Congressional Committee.

Writing Requirements (APA format)

How Do You Organize and Harmonize Your Art?

Apply the Seven Visual Elements to Art: How Do You Organize and Harmonize Your Art?

We use art in all kinds of ways in our everyday lives, often without recognizing the thought process involved. For example, when we select paintings, sculpture, art artifacts, etc. to decorate our homes and office spaces, we are actually critiquing art. Often we go far beyond superficial questions, such as does the color of the artwork match the furniture in the room and the paint on the walls? Most often in our selections, we are addressing critical aspects of art, such as what does this piece of art mean to me and why?

In this final course assignment, you will select a piece of modern art from your textbook that you would like to hang on your wall at home or in your office, and then analyze your selection based on two of the seven visual elements.

Using the Apply the Seven Visual Elements to Art Template [DOCX], write a 3–4-page paper in which you:

  1. Select one piece of modern art from your text that you can imagine hanging on your wall at home or at work and include the rationale behind your selection (1/2 page).
  • Be sure to include an image of your selected piece of modern art in your paper. The image is not included in the required page count.
  1. Provide a background, or context, on the artist, the time period, and the artwork based on information in the textbook (1/2–1 page).
  2. Describe the seven visual elements used to analyze art. These include: line, color, shape, form, value, space, and texture (1–1 1/2 pages).
  1. Explain which two of the seven visual elements most influenced your selection and why (1 page).
  2. Integrate at least two quality resources using Source List for Apply the Seven Visual Elements to Art Assignment [DOCX]:
  • In your assignment be sure to use in-text citations along with the provided source page.
  • See the sample paper for the assignment due in Week 3 as a guide for in-text citations.
  • Attach the source list page provided and enter the correct page number from your textbook for the piece of modern art you selected.
  1. Format your assignment according to the following formatting requirements:
  • This course requires the use of Strayer Writing Standards (SWS). For assistance and information, please refer to the Strayer Writing Standards link in the left-hand menu of your course. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Preferred method: Typed, double-spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.
  • Include a cover page containing the assignment title, your name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.
  • Citations and references must follow SWS format. The source list page is not included in the required page length.

The specific course learning outcome associated with this assignment is:

  • Analyze modern artworks based on their visual and contextual elements.

American History up to 1865

Choose an individual or event in American History up to 1865 and make an argument about why the person or event is significant. This topic should be completely different than the topic used for your Archives assignment. This topic should also be different from the topics already discussed. If for some reason you choose a topic and you later see it covered, choose a different topic to answer.

Each paragraph of your paper should reiterate and enforce the argument with evidence. Overall, there should be more analysis than a summary in the paper. Note that a thesis is not a factual statement. It has to be something that is a shade of gray that could be proven or disproved depending upon the evidence you choose to examine. I suggest that you review the following website that can help you understand how to construct a great historical thesis: http://www.bowdoin.edu/writing-guides/thesis.htm

This short paper is at least three double-spaced pages of text (Times New Roman, font size 12) and you must consult a minimum of three academically credible sources. Your bibliography and citations may be in APA or MLA.

If you use any of the information from your sources word-for-word, you must cite the source by using endnotes, footnotes, or parenthetical citations.  If you read the information and write it in your own words and it is not common knowledge, then you must cite the source because you are paraphrasing someone’s information.

short paper is normally 3-5 pages long. You must include a bibliography at the end of your paper. While composing your paper, use proper English. Do not use abbreviations, contractions, passive voice, or first/ second person (I, you, we, our, etc). Check your grammar and use spell check. Remember, the way you talk is not the way you write a paper.

Please note that the key to writing a short essay is including only the most pertinent information necessary to make your point. If possible, make sure you take breaks to keep the creative juices flowing

Discuss lessons in leadership with the examples of President Nixon and President Reagan

The 1970s and 1980s brought remarkable changes for the Untied States. The Cold War between the US and its allies versus the Soviet Union and its allies/clients was still the dominant international issue. China was also going to start emerging as a major world power. Nixon was dealing with Vietnam and then Watergate—one of the pivotal scandals of modern history. Reagan would bring a new national spirit, and he would tackle economic problems by deregulation and moderating taxes—and he would be dealing with a very new type of Soviet leadership.

Discuss lessons in leadership with the examples of President Nixon and President Reagan:

Choose and discuss (in a full paragraph or two) one of the following two topics related to the 1960s and 1970s, especially to the terms of Presidents Nixon and Reagan.

  1. Discuss lessons in leadership with the examples of President Nixon and President Reagan:
    • Identify a leadership example from President Nixon’s handling of the Watergate issue, and another example from Reagan’s presidency.
    • Give two lessons in leadership—one from each example. They can be positive lessons or negative lessons (good things to do; things not to do, etc). Discuss how these lessons can apply to those in business or politics or some other realm.
    • Identify the source(s) where you read about these issues.
  2. Discuss Presidents Nixon and Reagan as Cold Warriors:
    • Identify a strategy or policy from the Nixon presidency that related to the Cold War, and another from the Reagan presidency.
    • In hindsight, describe your views of each approach and how effective (or not) each approach was.
    • Identify the source(s) where you read these issues.

Instructions

For this assignment, read the attached materials and answer ONE of the provided questions. 300-400 words excluding references and a minimum of 3 references.

1.  What are the economic and political issues raised by having an imbalance between free and slave states? Why did the balance of free and slave states matter?

2. Consider the arguments over the expansion of slavery made by both northerners and southerners in the aftermath of the U.S. victory over Mexico. Who had the more compelling case? Or did each side make equally significant arguments?

3.  What strategies did slaves employ to resist, revolt, and sustain their own independent communities and cultures? How did slaves use white southerners’ own philosophies—paternalism and Christianity, for example—to their advantage in these efforts?

4.  In what ways did the Second Great Awakening and transcendentalism reflect and react to the changes in antebellum American thought and culture?

300-450 words excluding references, APA format, and a minimum of 3 references. See the attached reading materials.

Exhibition of World Art

Exhibition of World Art

Imagine you are a curator at your local city’s Museum of Art. You have been asked to organize a small exhibition of objects of art from the cultures of China, Japan, Africa, and the Americas; you will also showcase Islamic art. Your exhibition should include representative objects that highlight significant and essential ideas of each culture. You may plan to include actual objects in your exhibition, or photographs or models of larger structures or sculptures.

Survey your course textbook and reliable internet websites to locate two art objects from each of the following five cultures: China, Japan, Africa, the Americas, and Islam, that you would like to include in your exhibition. Your objects must date to the time period we are studying in this course (Prehistory -1300 CE). You will select a total of ten objects for display in your “Exhibition of World Art.”

Then, write a “museum label “for each object within a Microsoft Word document. The following should be on the “label” for each object:

  1. A photograph of the object
  2. Identifying information:
    1. Name of the artist (if known—otherwise, attribute the culture)
    2. Title of the work
    3. Date of the work
    4. Medium/materials used to create the work
    5. Current location
  3. A paragraph of 4-5 sentences describing why the object is representative of its culture and is culturally significant. Briefly explain why you have selected the object for display.

Finally, in a paragraph of 8-10 sentences, write a summarizing overview of your “Exhibition of World Art,” highlighting key similarities and distinctions between the objects you have curated. Imagine that visitors to your exhibition will read this overview as they enter your “Exhibition of World Art,” and provide them with any information or context they may need to fully appreciate the objects on display.

***write about America’s international superpower role for the long period since World War II to the present.***

Topic:

Cold War strategic concerns: “MAD Doctrine”

Cold War confrontations: Korean War

***write about America’s international superpower role for the long period since World War II to the present.***

Introduction

In your introduction section, include the information listed in the bullets below. Your introduction should be one paragraph in length:

  • Identify the      two examples you will discuss—one from the Cold War period (1947–1990);      another from the Post-Cold War period (1991-Present). Each example      involves a strategic concern and a confrontation.
  • Inform the      reader that you will be discussing the history and issues related to your      examples as well as comparing the two examples.

HISTORY AND ISSUES

In two paragraphs: Describe briefly the background of your example from the Cold War period (1947–1990) of a strategic concern and confrontation. Establish the general time period, key leaders, and any outcome. Then, in your second paragraph, do the same for your Post-Cold War example (from 1991–Present). You probably need in-text citations in these paragraphs.

COMPARISON

In your comparison paragraph, using the examples–compare the different historical contexts and strategic concerns and the outcomes. What do you see as the strengths and weakness in each example?

CONCLUSION

In your conclusion paragraph, consider your examples as they illuminate today’s international issues and America’s role in the world. What lessons can we learn from these examples? How do you think we should approach the future strategically?

So, what started the Civil War?

So, what started the Civil War? When did it start? Was there a “civil war” in the North during the Civil War?

We have a two-part question this week:

1) Look for Insights for how and why the Civil War started.

  • Now, think back over the course and recall how many times the North and South have disagreed over how America should be run. Think government, business, Africans/slaves, farming versus industry, regional differences, religion, and so forth.
  • Answer the question: what started the Civil War? Give three examples. Was it inevitable? Are we still fighting it today?

2) History books imply that racism was only in the South before the Civil War. Not so. Google “Jim Crow New York” and see what you find. Racism was especially rampant in New York state. After Lincoln officially pronounced the Emancipation Proclamation in January 1863, the Civil War enveloped a two-fold purpose: fighting for reuniting the Union and prohibiting slavery in captured confederate territory. This action set off a chain reaction that led to draft riots, which demonstrated Northern racism and casualties between blacks and whites.

  • Was the North as anti-slavery as we have been led to believe? Explain.

Discuss the rise of the United States to a world “superpower” from 1940 to the present day

In Assignment 3, we ask you to write about America’s international superpower role for the long period since World War II to the present using a Writing Guide provided in Blackboard. Your paper must use a minimum of three sources from the list provided below.

Your first step to completing this paper is to pick your topic. Below you will find two lists; one refers to Cold War period (1947-1990) examples of confrontation and one list provides examples of confrontations occurring in the Post-Cold War period (1991-Present). Each example will involve a specific strategic concern and confrontation. Review the examples below and choose one strategic concern and one confrontation from each time period to focus on in your paper. Once you have chosen your examples, review the sources noted below.

Be sure to review the other help (documents or video) provided by your instructor. For information on the SWS format, see the “Strayer Writing Standards” tab on the course menu.

Cold War period (1947-1990) possible examples – choose one strategic concern and one confrontation that illustrates that concern:

  • Cold War strategic concerns: Containment, Domino Theory, “MAD Doctrine”
  • Cold War confrontations: Berlin Airlift; Korean War; Vietnam War; Cuban Missile Crisis

Post-Cold War period (1991-Present) possible examples – choose one strategic concern and one confrontation that illustrates that concern:

  • Post-cold War strategic concerns: Terrorism, Rogue States; WMD
  • Post-Cold War confrontations: First Persian Gulf War; Invasion of Afghanistan; Invasion of Iraq;
  • Bombing of Libya (2011)

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Use the Strayer Writing Standards (SWS) . The format is different than other formats like APA. Please take a moment to review the SWS documentation for details.
  • Be typed, double spaced between lines, using Times New Roman font, Calibri, Arial, or Courier (size 10, 11, or 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and sources must follow SWS format. You must have a Sources list at the end; each source listed must also be cited in the body of the paper with an in-text citation.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the Sources page are not included in the required assignment page length.
  • The body of the paper should be five paragraphs and a total of 500-to-800 words in length. The 500 minimum is firm; you really have not adequately developed the paper if less than that. The 800 maximum is a loose guideline. The body of the paper is to be double-spaced. Typically, if you follow these instructions, the body of your paper will be 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 pages in length; add a page for your title page and another for your sources list and that then gets to 4-1/2-to 5-1/2. But the length requirement is evaluated by word count.

The paper must be submitted (uploaded and attached) in the course shell provided online.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Discuss the rise of the United States to a world “superpower” from 1940 to the present day and how the formal international policies of government influenced the role of America as a policeman of the world.

Discuss opposing viewpoints about free trade during the 1990s.

By the 1990s, the US was stepping into the “Information Age”. This would coincide with the presidency of Bill Clinton. One can also see this as a period when global connections really became more visible and faster, in part because of new trade agreements around the globe. In North America, there was NAFTA—the North American Free Trade Agreement. By the late 1990s the US economy was entering a dynamic period of growth.

Choose and discuss one of the following two topics related to the American history under President Clinton:

  1. Discuss opposing viewpoints about free trade during the 1990s.
    • For the period of the Clinton presidency, identify one view of those favoring “free trade” and one view of those who were opposed.
    • Explain how you would weigh the pros and cons of this policy. In hindsight, what is your view of NAFTA? Is globalization good?
    • Identify the source(s) where you read about these “free trade” issues of that time.
  2. Discuss the “economic rebound” of the late 1990s under President Clinton.
    • Identify three of the “package” of changes that characterized the economic boost of the “information revolution” in the late 1990s.
    • Discuss and explain what you think was the most important of these changes. What can we learn from that sort of period of economic rebound?
    • Identify the source(s) where you read about these changes during the late 1990s. For guidance, view this short video.
