Choose a membrane type from the following types: mucous, serous, cutaneous, synovial.

Overview

Throughout this module, we have observed that form follows function. All cells are made up of a similar composition of subcellular structures, yet size, shape, and texture varies tremendously and are directly correlated to what they do. Cancer is a pathological condition that occurs when cells no longer behave within normal parameters. This assignment will address how we can begin to understand cancer and treatments through the study of cells and tissues.

You should spend approximately 3.5 hours on this assignment.

Instructions

  1. Choose a membrane type from the following types: mucous, serous, cutaneous, synovial.
  2. Prepare a written paper of at least 1000 words that includes:
    1. Describe structure and function of your chosen tissue type, include locations in body and which four of the main tissue types it belongs to.
    2. Identify a specific type of cancer that affects your chosen tissue type and discuss pathological changes in your chosen tissue type at both gross and histological levels.
    3. Describe how subcellular features disrupt the cell cycle, which leads to development of the cancer type identified in part B.
    4. Examine how current therapies attempt to address this disruption in the cell cycle.
    5. Differentiate how the body responds differently to a tissue injury vs cancer.
  3. Your paper should be formatted as a proper research paper with an introduction and conclusion. Do not simply follow the bullet points above, but really think about what you have learned and how that relates to other material we have covered, and knowledge you have from other courses you may have taken. The Research and Report assignments in this course are capstone assignments for each module. You should be integrating everything that you learned in the textbook, explorations, discussions, and lab activities into your papers.
  4. All references must be cited using APA Style format. Please refer to the CCCOnline APA Citation Toolkit.
  5. Use what you have learned from this module to complete the assignment. In some cases, you may need to conduct additional research. See the Grading and Evaluation section in the Syllabus module for links to research databases in the CCCOnline Library.

1. You are asked to pick a specific type of cancer that affects one of the four membrane types listed. Skin cancer is a group of cancers that impact the epidermis and is not a specific type of cancer. If you wish to discuss cutaneous cancers, you can chose from basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, merkel cell cancer, and melanoma, etc.

2. Be sure to discuss what happens with your specific cancer type at both the gross (i.e., what you can see with the naked eye) and histological (i.e., what you can see with a microscope) levels.

3. You are also asked to discuss subcellular features that disrupt the cell cycle. These subcellular features can be anything from a mutation in a proto-oncogene to a missing cyclin/cyclin-dependent kinase, from a deleted tumor suppressor gene to a mutation in a protein necessary for the apoptosis pathway.

All sources should be reliable websites or online scholarly articles.

explain an aspect of the urinary system.

major structures and functions of the lymphatic system

The components of the immune system offer three lines of defense: The first line of defense involves surface barriers; the second line of defense involves the cells and proteins of innate immunity and the third defense involves the cells and protein of adaptive immunity.

Answer all the following questions:

  1. What are the major structures and functions of the lymphatic system and how does the lymphatic system interact with other body systems to help maintain homeostasis?
  2. Explain, with examples, the processes and rationale of fever and inflammation.
  3. Identify and describe antibodies main purpose and how they function. What do antibodies react to and how are they created?

What congenital heart disease is associated with heart murmurs?

1. Kate is born with features that do not look quite normal. Her eyes are wide-set and slightly slanted. Her nose is short and flat, and she keeps her mouth slightly open. There is a straight crease across her palm, and her fifth digit is unusually short. The doctor tells her parents she has an inherited disorder. If you were the doctor what would you diagnosis Kate with? Discuss the etiology of Kate’s disorder? What is the biggest risk factor for this disorder? How can or will this disorder affect Kate? What test could have been completed to diagnosis this disorder before Kate’s birth?

2. Research one autosomal dominant disease, one autosomal recessive disease, and a sex-linked disease. For each disease discuss: 1. Etiology, 2. Signs and Symptoms, 3. Diagnosis, 4. Treatment and Prevention. Provide additional information from an outside source.

3. A 12-year-old child experiences high fever and chills. He also says that his heart feels like its pounding. Two weeks before these symptoms, the child fell off his bike and skinned his knee. This child also has a history of a heart murmur. What disease should be considered and what is the treatment? What congenital heart disease is associated with heart murmurs?

4. A 59-year-old male calls the paramedics after experiencing an episode of chest pain while shoveling snow. He describes his pain as a crushing, tight feeling that radiates to his left arm and jaw. What type(s) of heart disease is this patient experiencing (explain)? What diagnostic test would you expect the physician to order and why? What is the treatment?

providing health promotion and disease prevention

An important role of nursing is to provide health promotion and disease prevention. Review the 2020 Topics and Objectives on the Healthy People website. Choose a topic of interest that you would like to address, in conjunction with a population at-risk for the associated topic. Submit the topic and associated group to your instructor for approval.

Create a 15-20 slide PowerPoint presentation for your topic and focus group. Include speaker notes and citations for each slide, and create a slide at the end for References.

Address the following:

  1. Describe the approved topic and associated population your group has selected. Discuss how this topic adversely affects the population. How does health disparity affect this population?
  2. Explain evidence-based approaches that can optimize health for this population. How do these approaches minimize health disparity among affected populations?
  3. Outline a proposal for health education that can be used in a family-centered health promotion to address the issue for the target population. Ensure your proposal is based on evidence-based practice.
  4. Present a general profile of at least one health-related organization for the selected focus topic. Present two resources, national or local, for the proposed education plan that can be utilized by the provider or the patient.
  5. Identify interdisciplinary health professionals important to include in the health promotion. What is their role? Why is their involvement significant?

Cite at least three peer-reviewed or scholarly sources to complete this assignment. Sources should be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and public health content.
