Asian immigrants in the west

  1. Asian immigrants in the west

Each region (North, South, West) of the United States experienced the era of Industrialization (1865–1920) differently, with different issues and groups at the forefront.

Choose one of the following groups in the American Industrial Era (1865-1920):

  1. New European immigrants in the east
  2. African Americans in the “new south”
  3. Asian immigrants in the west

Then, in a full paragraph or two:

  • Identify the main challenges facing this group during these industrial years.
  • Describe at least one specific example that illustrates such challenge(s) and how the group dealt with it.
  • Suggest lessons for our own time, such as positive or effective ways for some group today to deal with society’s barriers as well as the inevitable challenges of economic change.
  • Identify the source(s) where you read about the group and its challenges.

Empowering African Americans – Two Strategies

Assignment 1, we ask you to choose one of three topic choices listed below on the subject of diversity then use the Writing Guide located in Blackboard to write a brief paper on the subject. Each topic explores two different approaches to diversity during the 60-year period after the Civil War (1865 to 1925). The dynamic between the two approaches will have a profound impact on our history then and now.

As you prepare and brainstorm ideas for your paper, first read and review what our Schultz textbook covers on the subject. Then, consider the other sources listed with each topic below. It is important that you review these sources carefully because your paper should use a minimum of three sources from the list below.

Be sure to review the all help (documents or video) provided by your instructor. For information on the SWS format, see the “Strayer Writing Standards” tab on the course menu.

TOPIC I CHOOSE :

Empowering African Americans – Two Strategies

Here you will focus on the approaches of Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois. Other noted names and certainly different organizations will become part of your inquiry. Washington’s famous 1895 “Atlanta Compromise” speech (labeled such later by critics) sets the tone. One might find virtues, problems and successes associated with both strategies. You might see elements of each in strategies of later leaders and related issues even today.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Use the Strayer Writing Standards (SWS) . The format is different than other formats like APA. Please take a moment to review the SWS documentation for details.
  • Be typed, double spaced between lines, using Times New Roman font, Calibri, Arial, or Courier (size 10, 11, or 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and sources must follow SWS format. You must have a Sources list at the end; each source listed must also be cited in the body of the paper with an in-text citation.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the Sources page are not included in the required assignment page length.
  • The body of the paper should be five paragraphs and a total of 500-to-800 words in length. The 500 minimum is firm; you really have not adequately developed the paper if less than that. The 800 maximum is a loose guideline. The body of the paper is to be double-spaced. Typically, if you follow these instructions, the body of your paper will be 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 pages in length; add a page for your title page and another for your sources list and that then gets to 4-1/2-to 5-1/2. But the length requirement is evaluated by word count.

The paper must be submitted (uploaded and attached) in the course shell provided online.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Discuss the developments, racial and political policies, and laws from 1865 to the 1920s following the end of slavery.

discuss how the intricacies of the alliance in WWII set the conditions for Cold War conflict in the post-war period.

On January 1, 1942 the US and USSR formalized their WWII alliance with the Declaration of the United Nations. Moscow and Washington coordinated an effective war strategy to defeat Germany and Italy in Europe. Gaddis pays special attention to the positive exchanges between the two powers between 1941-1945. But Gaddis also discusses how the complexities of war precipitated hostilities between the Soviets and Americans. Although it may seem natural for friends in war to engender a long-lasting and resilient unity, the realities of WWII strained the bonds of all the allied nations, especially the Soviet Union and the United States.

For this essay, students should discuss how the intricacies of the alliance in WWII set the conditions for Cold War conflict in the post-war period.   How did WWII, and the decisions, strategies and goals exchanged between the Soviets and Americans during the conflict contribute to the deterioration of relations that ultimately triggered the Cold War? In short, why did the Soviets and Americans emerge from WWII as rivals rather than friends?

The analysis should cover Soviet-American relations during the entire span of WWII. In other words, do not simply discuss the nature of Soviet-American relations during a single year, or single episode.

Students should analyze at least 4 examples that contributed to the decline in Soviet-American relations during WWII.

The analysis should exhibit a sophisticated understanding of the Gaddis text.

The analysis needs to contain explicit discussions of exchanges/policies/aims between the Soviets and Americans during WWII that tie directly to the essay topic. Avoid presenting general information about WWII. Essays that discuss WWII, the Cold War, and Soviet-American relations in a manner that does not explicitly attempt to answer the topic/prompt/question will be penalized.

The essay must be between 4-6 pages long. It must be at least 4 pages, but not longer than 6.

Double space the text. 12 point, Times New Roman font. Use standard margins.

Do not use outside sources.  For in-text citations, simply write (Gaddis, page #).

Students must submit their essay through turn-it-in.

Frederick Douglass’s Narrative or the American Experience Episode “The Abolitionists”

Frederick Douglass’s Narrative or the American Experience Episode “The Abolitionists”

final assignment is a 3-5 page response to either Frederick Douglass’s Narrative or the American Experience Episode “The Abolitionists” (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/abolitionists/).  In either case you should in a well-organized essay analyze the threat posed by the abolitionists to the Southern way of life and offer your take on how successfuleither Douglass as an individual or the abolitionists collectively were in their efforts.  Be sure to include a clear thesis in your introduction and use specific

examples from the reading/film to back up your point.  Your will be graded both on style and content.  Please double space and use a standard twelve-point font (preferably Times New Roman) and one inch margins.  Please use only course discussion and the assigned texts/video in formulating your answer.  You should cite your sources parenthetically.  That is at the end of

each quotation or paraphrase you must include the author’s last name and page number.  For example if you quote Douglass’s Narrative page 35 you would list the reference as (Douglass 35).

Explain briefly the approach and aim of the “muckrakers” and that of F. W. Taylor.

Various reform groups with various causes developed in the US in the late 1800s and early 1900s; these are loosely called “Progressives” as they aimed to use government policies or science to improve and advance society. Also, this period was a time when the US started as a major player in international conflicts—first in the “Spanish American War and then in World War I. There were deep isolationist sentiments about such overseas entanglements, and President Wilson first has one position and then the other.

Choose and discuss (in a full paragraph or two) one of the following two topics related to the late 1800s and early 1900s.

  1. In the Progressive Era (roughly 1890–1920), multiple groups advocated for reforms in various aspects of government, society, and the economy. Discuss here the “muckrakers” and Taylor’s “scientific management”.
    • Explain briefly the approach and aim of the “muckrakers” and that of F. W. Taylor.
    • Compare their approaches and describe your feelings about them, and relate some modern situation that reminds you of one of these approaches and reform causes.
    • Identify the source(s) where you read about the reform cause.
  2. From the text, Wilson did not maintain his own campaign slogan (“He kept us out of war”).
    • Explain with some specifics why Wilson became pro-war. Describe your own feelings on that issue when you look back at it, and whether he was right to change.
    • Briefly, identify a similar international consideration today—or of the last 20 years, and what lesson might be drawn from the example in Wilson’s time.
    • Identify the source(s) where you read about Wilson.

Getting Women the Vote—Two Strategies

Getting Women the Vote—Two Strategies

Here you will focus on the approaches of two organizations and some names associated with each. These are the NAWSA (National American Woman Suffrage Association; later the League of Women Voters) and the NWP (National Women’s Party). You will identify the strategic approach and key players in each as they pursued the common goal of getting women the right to vote. One might find virtues, problems and successes associated with both strategies. You might see elements of each in strategies of later leaders and related issues even today.

Introduction

In your introduction section, complete each step listed in the bullets below. Your answer should be one paragraph in length:

  • Identify the two different approaches that you will discuss—including people, organizations, and strategies.
  • Describe what you will cover in the paper.

HISTORY AND ISSUES

In two paragraphs, describe briefly the development of each view or strategy, any key people or events, and any “success” either side had in seeing that view come to pass.

COMPARISON

In your comparison paragraph, evaluate what you see as the strengths and weaknesses of each view, and the impact of each in that period of history. Explain which approach you favor and why?

CONCLUSION

In your conclusion paragraph, identify similar issues or approaches that developed later, and any similar issues today.

  4. Present a strategic plan for sustaining the change after the plan has been implemented.
  5. Predict potential obstacles or unintended consequences and recommend strategies to overcome or respond to them.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide
