Does the black community bear in responsibility in the perpetuation of these stereotypical portrayals?

Blackface has been a hot topic lately yet few Americans understand or are knowledgeable about its origins.  This discussion board forum will ask you to consider the history and origins of blackface and other cultural stereotypes of African Americans as discussed in Lesson 8 of Unit Two.  Please discuss the following:

  • Which of the stereotypes presented in Lesson 8 has, in your opinion, made the most enduring impressions on the reputation and image of African Americans in our own day and time?  Why do you think so?
  • Does the black community bear in responsibility in the perpetuation of these stereotypical portrayals?  Why or why not?

Discuss the role of the “cotton revolution” and other factors in the  expansion and transformation of slavery during the late eighteenth and  early nineteenth centuries.

This discussion addresses the following outcomes:

  • Discuss the role of the “cotton revolution” and other factors in the  expansion and transformation of slavery during the late eighteenth and  early nineteenth centuries. (CO#1, #5)
  • Explain slavery’s influence on national politics and the development  of prevailing Northern and Southern views on slavery (CO#4, #5, #6/Gen.Ed. Outcome 4.2)

Slavery grew along with the United States, not just in the number of  slaves but in the nature of the institution itself. It underlay the  South’s wealth and to a great degree formed the South’s political and  social identity. The “cotton revolution” enabled the expansion of  slavery westwards and the same time that the Northern states abolished  it within their borders. The nation’s westward expansion soon confronted  the United States with several political controversies that reinforced  sectional differences.

In preparation for our discussion be sure to read the Module Notes, Chapter 11: “The Cotton Revolution (Links to an external site.)” in The American Yawp, Mullen, L. (2014), “These Maps Reveal How Slavery Expanded Across the United States (Links to an external site.)”, and read the following primary sources:  The Missouri Crisis (Links to an external site.) (1820), George Fitzhugh Argues that Slavery is Better than Liberty and Equality, 1854, and Harriet Jacobs on Rape and Slavery, 1860.

Using the primary and secondary source materials above as evidence, consider the following in a post of at least 250 words:

  • How did the American system of slavery change by the early 1800s because of the “cotton revolution”?
  • How did different political, economic, cultural and ideological  differences between the North and South shape the debate over slavery in  the early 1800s?

Define the concept of “Manifest Destiny” and examine its role in  American expansionism into Texas and other Mexican territories.

This discussion addresses the following outcomes:

  • Define the concept of “Manifest Destiny” and examine its role in  American expansionism into Texas and other Mexican territories. (CO#1, #3)

Expansion is a major theme of the United States’ history. As a young,  energetic country, the United States also saw itself as gifted by  Providence to spread out into neighboring lands. The migration of  Americans into Mexican territory opened a new chapter in that story.  Texan independence from Mexico seemed to fulfill the promise of Manifest  Destiny, not just in terms of land but in the spread of American  ideals. However, the Mexican-American War and westward migration did not  benefit all.

In preparation for our discussion be sure to read the Module Notes, Chapter 12: “Manifest Destiny (Links to an external site.)” and the following primary sources: John O’Sullivan Declares America’s Manifest Destiny, 1845,  (Links to an external site.)Cherokee Petition Protesting Removal, 1836, (Links to an external site.) and Chinese Merchant Complains of Racist Abuse, 1860. (Links to an external site.)

(Links to an external site.)Using the primary and secondary source materials above as evidence, consider the following in a post of at least 250 words: (Links to an external site.)

  • What was the concept of Manifest Destiny? How did it rationalize  westward migration, US expansion into Mexican territories, the  Mexican-American War, and the Monroe Doctrine?
  • Choose one of the following groups and consider how the changes to  the west in this era affected their circumstances: American migrants,  displaced Native Americans, Chinese immigrants, Mexicans in the acquired  territories, or slaves

Question 1:

Discuss the various issues confronting the nation in the 1850s that  so inflamed the passions of people in both the North and the South such  that peaceful compromise became less and less a possibility in the  election of 1860. Do you ever foresee a time when America might reach a  similar impasse that could lead to another Civil War? What issues would  likely create this situation?

How did the Gettysburg Address change the nature and purpose of the Civil War?
