Standard Precautions

1.     1985: The Center for Disease Control introduced universal precautions.                                                                       A. Universal precautions are a set of guidelines that aim to reduce the transmissions of bloodborne diseases that spread via body fluids.                                                                                                                          1. It was mainly introduced to hospitals as a response to the epidemic of STDs.
2.     1987: New set of guidelines introduced by the CDC called the Body Substance Isolation.                                           A. This new addition to the guidelines were aimed to avoid physical contact with all body  substances that were wet or moist.                                                                                                                                                1. A limitation of this new set of guidelines was that it only recommended the washing of hands if they were visibly soiled, a practice that is long outdated in today’s modern practice.
3.     1996: The Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) combined the Universal Precautions with Body Substance Isolation to create the modern Standard Precautions.                                         A. Now included precautions based on airborne, droplet, and direct contact precautions.
