Reflection Paper Assignment Instructions Online MGT 430 Negotiations – Summer 2019
In-class negotiation simulations give you the chance to hone your negotiation skills and learn more about the particular topics covered that week. For this assignment, you will formalize your learning by writing about the BioPharm-Seltek exercise in a self-reflection paper worth 150 points. For this assignment, you, as an individual, will write a short (no more than 4 double-spaced pages) paper consisting of the 3 sections below. Do not exceed recommended length guidelines below for each section. Please use a bold heading for each section so that it is clear that you completed each part of the paper and to help the reader follow.
1. Summary: What happened in the exercise? (0.5 pages) While I know the specifics of the scenario and each party’s role, I do not know what actually transpired during the exercise. Please give me a short synopsis of what happened between you and the other party. Who opened, was there a counteroffer… what outcome? What did you do to prepare? Your strategy?
2. Analysis: Why did the negotiation happen the way it did? (1.5-2 pages) Now that I know what happened, explain why it happened. Define and apply at least 3 class concepts to provide an analysis of how your decisions and actions (and those of your partner) led to the ultimate outcome of the interaction. Choose any concepts from the textbook, lectures or readings; some examples include:
o BATNA/Reservation point/Goals/ZOPA o First offers and anchoring o Power/Leverage/Persuasion Tactics o Your/Your partner’s personal negotiation style o Preparation and planning o Distributive approaches to negotiation o Integrative approaches to negotiation o Ethical considerations o Cultural barriers
3. Takeaways: What did you learn from doing this exercise? What will you do differently the next
time? (1-1.5 pages) Please conclude by reflecting on what you learned in this exercise that will make you a better negotiator. What would you do differently if you were to encounter a similar situation in the future? Provide specific examples and behaviors.
The format of the reflection paper should follow these guidelines:
Length = 3-4 pages, double-spaced, Font = Times New Roman 12 pt, Margins = 1 inch You will be graded on the following criteria:
Summary (20 points): Concise, easy-to-follow, description of the simulation you are writing about, who was involved, and what happened.
Analysis (60 points): In-depth definition and application of at least 3 class concepts. For full credit you must provide original analysis that uses class concepts but also goes beyond our class lectures, discussions or debriefs.
Takeaways (40 points): Insightful, original discussion of lessons learned and future changes. Again, the best answers will contain unique insights not mentioned in class presentations.
2
Overall writing clarity and quality (30 points): Logical flow and structure of paper, appropriate grammar and spelling.
