There are various verbal operants that play a role in the development of communication and language. Each one has great benefits to a child’s language and speech. For example, learning how to mand(ask) for what they need or want can decrease maladaptive behaviors and give natural reinforcement to the child. With benefits comes limitations, when introducing each verbal operant to a child it is very important to reinforce each occurrence to gain momentum for that behavior to increase. When a teacher starts to fade the reinforcement, this can cause outburst and expectations of getting reinforced. For example, a child starts manding for Ipad independently and for the first few days the teachers gives him access each mand he does. What happens when the teacher stops giving the reinforcement each occurrence? Another limitation is the behavior of remembering the answer but not understanding the answer. For example, a child is learning to tact a police officer(community helper) and he is successfully tacting with no prompts. When a police officer walks by him one day and the teacher ask who is that, he says fire fighter this can show the skill was not functionally taught. Another limitation is when a child gives “robot” answers. For example, a child is working on answering intraverbals(what flies in the sky?) and the teacher accepts the answer airplane each time the question is asked. The child will always answer airplane if not provided with multiple answers. This can cause a child to not identify the various things that fly in the sky and only associate airplane with flying in the sky.

Unit 9, Discussion Prompt Option 2
The limitations to teaching basic verbal operant can be a struggle in academic achievement, social participation and social communication. I could minimize these limitations when teaching my clients by using different examples or activities focused around social settings. For instance, teaching tacting I would focus on a social setting such as a park or a community center and teach different tacting items in the different locations.
