3 levels of racism
- view this 10-minute PBS New Hour video discussing the impact of racism on Black infant and maternal mortality: https://youtu.be/AODAk-accVc (Links to an external site.)
- Third, reflect on the video to respond to the following prompts below.
Step 1:
On Tuesday you learned about 3 levels of racism through both an article and video highlighting Dr. Camara Jones’ work. On Thursday and in the PBS News Hour video you learned about how racism may be a key contributor to disparities in maternal and infant mortality among Black Moms and babies. Keep this in mind as you respond to these prompts:
- Select 1 of the 3 levels of racism (i.e., institutionalized, personally mediated, internalized) and explain how this level may specifically be contributing to maternal and infant mortality disparities among Black Moms and babies. Be specific and detailed, providing examples as appropriate (you can think of your own examples or include some from the PBS News Hour video you watched).
- Respond/react to this week’s content (i.e., racism, disparities among various groups, social determinants of health, inequities, etc.) For example, you can describe how the content made you feel or how your life has been impacted by any of these concepts, or you can discuss how you would like to address the content in your future career. There are no “right” or “wrong” answers to this prompt- I just wanted to allow each of you the space to share your thoughts and feelings as well as respond/react to your classmates’ thoughts and feelings since this is an intense week of material.
